Whanaungatanga Awards

Halswell School has developed a school-wide system to acknowledge students who are modelling our new values in the playground. Through the children's time at Halswell School (years 0 - 8), they will have the opportunity to earn five significant certificates, one for each valueWhen a child has gained all of these certificates they will receive a special award recognising this achievement. It may take several years for a child to gain all five certificates.

For the start of term one, the students have been learning about the value Whanaungatanga:

In Ahuriri, we have been discussing and writing about ways in which we can grow connections and relationships with each other. The children have some wonderful ideas about smiling and saying hello to new children,  including others in play, sitting next to people who are on their own. We have been demonstrating this and talking about examples of Whanaungatanga that we see the children modelling.

In our virtual Whole School Assembly today we awarded four value certificates for Whanaungatanga.

We do have Ahuriri Certificates that the children receive more regularly and that recognise special efforts in learning, behaviour, sport, and events such as starting school.

If you would like to find out more about the school's values please watch this video that was shared with the community in our first week of this year:

Mathematics in Ahuriri

Many children will say they haven't done maths during their day at school. But we do heaps of maths through play and exploration.  Here you can see the children using the equipment.  Gaining a number sense, understanding the physical quantity of number, counting on our fingers and in our head, counting one to one, seeing patterns and talking about our ideas are the big concepts we practise every day.

We had a huge joint class mathematics session when some children started to build a long line of unifix.  The adventure took off and before long all the children were involved in creating a mammoth snake that went all over the studio.  We then used a metre stick to compare, estimate and measure it's length.  It

was 18 metres long!  We then guessed whether we were smaller or longer than the metre.

Mathematics should be relevant and meaningful to the children, and most of all enjoyable!

Friday Fun Day!

We have fun learning every day of the week but on Fridays we ramp up the fun even further!  There are many activities for the children to choose.  We have a large construction kit which we call the "Blue Stuff".  The children's imagination can run wild with their creations while they learn how to cooperate, communicate and engage.

We also offer baking, painting, music and other learning opportunities over the term. Today we celebrated the Chinese New Year, made some celebration lanterns and had Gardening Club with Jo to sort out our  garden area! Take a look at the photos to see the children's choices!
