Mathematics in Ahuriri

Many children will say they haven't done maths during their day at school. But we do heaps of maths through play and exploration.  Here you can see the children using the equipment.  Gaining a number sense, understanding the physical quantity of number, counting on our fingers and in our head, counting one to one, seeing patterns and talking about our ideas are the big concepts we practise every day.

We had a huge joint class mathematics session when some children started to build a long line of unifix.  The adventure took off and before long all the children were involved in creating a mammoth snake that went all over the studio.  We then used a metre stick to compare, estimate and measure it's length.  It

was 18 metres long!  We then guessed whether we were smaller or longer than the metre.

Mathematics should be relevant and meaningful to the children, and most of all enjoyable!
